Most of us have heard of the game of Bloody Mary, but I’m sure if asked, most people couldn’t tell you the story behind the game. She is said to appear in a mirror when her name is chanted repeatedly. Originally the ritual was for unwed women to walk up the stairs backwards in darkness holding a candle and mirror. It was believed that if you did this, you would see your future husband in the mirror; if you were destined to be alone you would see a skull. Nowadays, the ritual is to go into a candlelit bathroom and chant Bloody Mary into the mirror 13 times. Bloody Mary will then appear in the mirror.
Historians don’t know for sure if Bloody Mary was a real person or not, but they do have some speculations. Some people believe that she is Mary I of England (daughter of Chatherine of Aragorn and Henry VIII). She had over 300 people burned at the stake in her reign of terror over England. This earned her the nickname of Bloody Mary. Another woman could be Elizabeth Báthory who allegedly killed over 660 women and girls and was accused of vampirism.
There is a legend about a lady Kuchisake-onna, the Slit Mouthed Lady. It originated in Japan, during the Heian period (roughly 1200-800 years ago). She was a beautiful woman who married a Samurai. She was unfaithful and her husband cut her mouth ear to ear giving her a permanent smile. After his horrible deed he said, “Who will think you’re pretty now?” Her ghost goes around with a mask and asks “Am I pretty?” If you say no she cuts your face to look the same as her’s; if you say yes she takes the mask off and asks again. After she takes off the mask and you say no, she will cut you, but if you say yes she will follow you home and end you. There is a theory that the only way to escape is to say something like you’re ok or you’re fine or not providing her a straight answer she should get confused and you may be able to escape.
